2007 British Army Corps Merit Rugby Cup Final
8th March
The 2007 British Army Corps Merit Rugby Cup Final took place yesterday (March 8th) in Aldershot, with the Royal Engineers (RE) taking on the Royal Logistic Corp (RLC) for the Merit Cup. The cup is competed for annually by the top two teams in the Merit League.
The RLC have been the dominant team in this league for a couple of years, winning the cup last year and finishing top of the league this year. By contrast, the RE on the other hand ended last season bottom of the table and narrowly avoided relegation by managing to beat the team who came top of League Two, and began this season with only 7 players turning up for the first training session!
A close fought match saw the RE dominate the first half, with some superb wing play and aggressive tackling from the forwards, only for the RLC to make a very strong push to take the game in the second half against a tiring RE. However, sheer grit and determination on the part of the RE kept the RLC from taking the game and a final score of 20-15 to the RLC saw them lift the trophy to the delight of their noisy supporters.
The team will now go onto a tour of Australia in May. Hesco Bastion are again providing sponsorship for this event. This tour will be used to promote and develop the sport of rugby union to others within the Corps and will I am sure enable them to compete at the highest level again not just next year but for several year to come.
