The recent increase in terrorist activity has highlighted the need for a more considered approach to the security of major facilities such as oil refineries, power plants or ports.
Concertainer units were awarded K-12 Certification by the US Department of State in 2005. K-12 Certification specifies that a barrier must stop a 15,000lb. truck traveling at 50 mph and impacting the barrier at a 90° degree angle. Testing demonstrated the ability of a structure built from Concertainer units to slow down, hinder or stop fast moving commercial vehicles. Testing has also been conducted in the US by the Air Force Force Protection Battle Labs.

Providing a secure border structure is an ideal use for Concertainer units. Structures of indeterminate length can be constructed quickly and with minimal manpower. Additionally, Concertainer units can be used to construct vehicle search areas, vehicle roadblocks, and traffic management systems.

Concertainer units, if used correctly, will mitigate blast effects by dissipating blast energy so that acoustic and shock waves, peak overpressure, reflected peak overpressure, impulse and after-burn are reduced.
However, in a facility such as a chemical plant or oil refinery, problems are also caused by the generation of fireballs that will sympathetically detonate other areas. Concertainer units can help contain the spread of a fireball by providing a physical barrier to slow down its progress.
