Project Flood-protection walls
On a Friday afternoon, early in the summer of 2008, HESCO Bastion USA received an urgent call from a facilities manager at the University of Iowa’s Department of Facilities Planning and Construction. Predicted flood levels had risen by four feet in only one day, spelling trouble for the campus. Within a few hours of that initial phone call, approximately 5,000 linear feet of HESCO Concertainer units were ordered and dispatched.

A HESCO technical representative rode with the product from Hammond, LA, to the city of Iowa, IA, so that he could be on site with the product’s arrival. Predicting floods is one thing; predicting flood levels is something else entirely. Only hours after installation, the deployed HESCO Concertainer units had two to three feet of river against them. A second tier of units was added, after the water continued to rise above predicted levels. This ability to raise a HESCO Concertainer structure, in response to a constantly changing situation, was central to the success of this project. Sandbag structures also used in the flood fight could not be raised, since the base was under water and simply could not be expanded.

All 5,000 feet of units were deployed in under 48 hours from the initial phone call. HESCO Concertainer units saved numerous campus buildings, by diverting the river, controlling its path. Today, the university has nearly three miles of Concertainer units stockpiled in storage, awaiting any future flood threats.
